Rockin' Rich Lynch On the Scene: Bishop Gunn
It's not often you get the impression that you could be watching the next rock giants in the making. But, on a Tuesday night in Tennessee that's the feeling we came away with when we caught Bishop Gunn assault Franklin with their debut CD release concert at the much loved Main Street theater. We wondered if this was how early fans of The New Yardbirds felt. Travis McCready (on vocals, harp and guitar) in a live setting had the same energetic qualities as a Russell Allen or Myles Kennedy with a bit of Glenn Hughes and Chris Robinson thrown in for good measure. Kind of hard to nail down but potent and powerful.
The rest of the crew Burne Sharp (drums), Drew Smithers (guitar) and Ben Lewis (bass) only recently came together to form this core four but the results are promising and the Franklin faithful were left stunned not only by this night's performance - but of the possibility and prowess of this quality quartet. On their debut released this week there is an even more nuanced mix of rock, blues, country and swamp that will keep you hitting the play button on your device of choice.
Bishop Gunn is ready for the big time in Tennessee.
