In January of 2014, I was in a downward spiral. There was a confluence of external forces that began to conspire to just crush me. The darkness was closing in and I was barely holding on. Then – something strange happened – Madison Holleran committed suicide.
Madison was a beautiful young woman who I had been reading about for the past four years. She was a regularly featured “local athlete of the week” in our daily paper. But, nothing could prepare me for that cold January morning – the 18th to be exact – when her face was staring back at me as the news told the horrible account of her death on the previous night.
“It was shocking to me because here was this beautiful, talented, accomplished athlete with an incredibly bright future and she made the decision to snuff out her own light,” Lynch said recalling the origins of his musical tribute to her. “I immersed myself completely in her story and weeks later emerged with a song. The writing and processing of that troubling information literally saved my own life as it helped me take my own path and career more seriously.”
The song eventually came out in January 2015 to coincide with the one year anniversary of her passing. Now, on the one year anniversary of the passing of the”Madison Holleran Suicide Prevention Act” – which requires that all New Jersey colleges provide students with round-the-clock access to health care professionals with mental health training – comes a new book that tells the story of the secret struggles and tragic death of an All-American teen. Authored by noted ESPN commentator and journalist Kate Fagan “What Made Maddy Run: The Secret Struggles and Tragic Death of an All-American Teen” is required for anyone sending their children off to college this Fall and for everyone seeking insight into matters of depression and its treatment.
